Loft Insulation Frequently asked questions

Click here for Frequently Asked Questions about Cavity Wall Insulation.

Here are some of the more frequently asked questions with the answers but if you still have questions about the work after reading then please call us on this number 0800 1073847.

Q

What is loft insulation?

A

Loft insulation is man-made mineral fibre often referred to as “quilt” and is usually supplied in rolls. It will be delivered into your loft sealed inside a plastic package.  Modern material is much less irritating than in the past but it is still best to keep your exposure to the material to a minimum.

Q

How long does loft insulation last?

A

Providing the material is left undisturbed, it is maintenance free and should last indefinitely.

Q

Is my house suitable?

A

We have to survey your property before we start any work, to make sure that it is suitable.  This assessment may be undertaken by a Surveyor or the Technician before installation.

Q

What happens to items stored within the loft space?

A

It is always better if our Technicians can work in a clear loft. Small items of storage such as Christmas trees and suitcases will be moved within the loft by our Technicians, but they cannot move heavy or large amounts of items. If you cannot move such items yourself  before we arrive then we can organise loft clearances for you – contact us for a quote.

Q

Do I need to provide anything?

A

No, our Technicians will bring everything they need with them including lights and ladders. They may however need to use a very small amount of your electric.

Q

What is the procedure regarding boarded areas?

A

Boards should be removed prior to the start of the work but if they are not needed, we can lay our material over the top of them.

Q

How is loft insulation installed?

A

Current guideline are to ensure that insulation is laid between and across the joists. This is called “cross-laying” and once complete the Technician will display a Warning sign in the loft stressing that the joists are not visible and that you should not access the loft without the use of crawling boards and only still if you are aware of the exact position of the joists. Our Technicians will also insulate any water carrying pipes and tanks in the loft and insulate the loft hatch.

Q

How long will loft insulation take?

A

Between 1-2 hours for an average sized 3 Bedroom Semi house.

Q

Is there much mess?

A

No, all packaging and left over material will be removed from your home by our Technicians and the landing area hoovered up before they go.
